Jane Lerner is a writer and editor who lives in Brooklyn, New York. She is an experienced media professional with superlative writing skills and expertise as an editor, proofreader and researcher.
Born and raised in Chicago to a newspaperman dad and an opera-singer mom, Jane attended college at UC Santa Cruz and lived in San Francisco for almost 10 years before settling in New York City in 2002.
In her own writing, Jane concentrates on food, cooking and restaurants as her primary subject, with forays into design, nightlife, culture and NYC-centric topics. Her pieces have appeared in amNY, Garden Design, Manhattan, nycgo.com, the Daily Swarm, Print and the NY Post, and over the years she has contributed to Daily Candy, Citysearch, New York Magazine, Chocolatier, Pastry Art & Design, Metromix, Time Out New York, XLR8R, BPM, Delish.com and Flavorpill, among others. Up until January 2012, Jane was the editor and blogger for the Brooklyn Flea, running the daily updated website at brooklynflea.com.
When she first arrived on the East Coast, a short-lived career as a music publicist for major and indie record labels morphed into editorial work at Rolling Stone, where she was a researcher and fact-checker for book projects, special issues and the regular magazine. As a freelance editor Jane has worked in-house for publications such as Us Weekly, Budget Travel, House & Garden, High Times, Martha Stewart Weddings, Men's Journal, Playboy, Inked, Res, Print, W, Blender, Manhattan, V and V Man, as well as for companies like NYC & Company, VH1 and AIGA.
Jane also works as a copy writer for advertising and marketing efforts. She wrote the copy for Bon Appetit's Feast or Fashion booklet, a standalone publication that was distributed during the fall 2011 fashion week. She researched and wrote amNY's 2011 Tribeca Film Festival special insert, and has been hired as a copy writer for food products (Il de France cheese), government agencies (NYC & Company) and advertising firms.
Off the page, Jane is the co-organizer of BK Swappers, a food-swap event where local food enthusiasts trade homemade, edible goods. She is a regular volunteer for the food-justice organization Just Food, is a member of IACP and stands as an annual judge for the James Beard journalism awards.
